Geographical Location of North Cyprus

Cyprus is the third largest island after Sicily and Sardinia in the Mediterranean. Neighboring countries are Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Greece and Israel. It lies 65 km away from the southern coast of Turkey. The total area of the island is approximately 9,252 sq km, but North Cyprus covers a total area of 3,515 sq km or nearly one third of the whole island. It is some 242 km wide and 64 km deep at its extreme points.

The coastline of North Cyprus consists of enchanting coves, rocky coast and long golden sandy beaches. The beaches of North Cyprus are among the cleanest and safest in the Mediterranean.

The most prominent feature of North Cyprus is the northern range of mountains, known as the Kyrenia Mountains, or Five Finger Mountains. It is a narrow range, approximately 130 km long, running parallel to the coastline. Occupying an area of about 260 sq km, it is composed predominately of limestone, dolomite, and marble. The highest point is Mount Selvili, near the village of Lapta, at 1,023 m.

Troodos Mountains cover most of the southern and western portions of the island and account for roughly half of its area.

The Mesaoria plain, which lies in the center of the island, between the Kyrenia Mountains and the Troodos Mountains in the south, is used for the production of central crops such as wheat, barley and oats. It is known as the breadbasket of Cyprus.

Cities and Towns in North Cyprus

Nicosia (Lefkosa), which lies to the south of the Kyrenia range, is the capital of North Cyprus. Its population is 73,000. The boundary, or as it is called “The Green Line”, separating North from South Cyprus runs through the city.

The other major centers are the tourist resorts of Famagusta (Magusa) (population 46,000), Kyrenia (Girne) (population 57,000), the citrus center of Guzelyurt (Morphou) (population 20,000) and Iskele (population 8,000).

Summer (June to September) is a season of hot weather in Cyprus, with high temperatures and cloudless skies, but the sea breeze makes a pleasant atmosphere in coastal areas. The temperature of the hottest months July and August crawls to 34 ºC and even to 45 ºC. Winters (November to March) are moderately rainy with mild temperatures. Coldest months are January and February (temperature can decrease up to 10 ºC). Spring and autumn are warm and pleasant. The average annual temperature is 20 ºC.
